Semester vs cumulative
Semester GPA summarizes one term. Cumulative GPA combines terms using the same rules your school applies—often total quality points divided by total credit hours in college, or total grade points divided by total classes in high school (depending on policy).

A short worked example
College-style: three-credit A (4.0) plus three-credit B (3.0) is (12 + 9) ÷ 6 = 3.5 for that pair. Add a four-credit C (2.0) and the cumulative becomes (12 + 9 + 8) ÷ 10 = 2.9. Credit hours—not course count—drive the average.
