FAQ

What is the average GPA?

How to interpret national averages, school reports, and weighted scales.

Why “average GPA” depends on context

Published averages differ by institution, major, and whether the number is weighted or unweighted. A report for one high school is not interchangeable with a national college sample.

When you see a headline number online, check what population it measures (all students, admitted students only, first-year GPA, and so on).

Ballpark framing (not a rule)

On an unweighted 4.0 scale, a broad middle band for many students lands near a B average—often described in the high-2 to mid-3 range—but your transcript and school policy are the real sources of truth.

Weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0 by design; comparing them to unweighted numbers without a key is misleading.
